Here at Bartley’s Home Grown Poodles, our main focus is quality dogs. Meeting premium breed standards and passing all genetic screening. All while maintaining every animal in a natural loving home environment.
We started our program in 2020, all of our poodles are Canadian Kennel Club and some are also American Kennel Club. All puppies will be registered under CKC, Canadian Kennel Club.
Small standard poodles is our main focus on size here at Bartley’s Home Grown Poodles. Having grown up with toy poodles, I knew the breed was wonderful but we wanted to choose a size that was hearty, could partake in all family and outdoor activities in almost all weather temperatures. We love the size as medium breed companion for children, teens, adults, and seniors, this size of poodle can keep up with all the fun!
Our small standard poodles range in size from 17-20” and 25-35lbs (not a guarantee, occasionally a puppy could end up being a bit bigger).
We take pride in ALL of our program dogs having undergone professional balanced obedience training and all are upkept in their training daily. They are completely behavioral healthy dogs. What does this mean? They are friendly towards all ages and types of people including respectful children, friendly towards other dogs, do not display anxious behaviors even when left alone, ability to be calm when asked, respond to everyday commands well, do not possess guarding habits of toys or people, adapt well to change, not fearful of normal events, adapt well to strangers, no unnecessary or excessive barking. They are just truly happy, healthy, and balanced!
FAQ
Q: Are your puppies raised in your home?
A: Our puppies are all born in our home so we can watch them closely- we are hands on in the birth process. Once born, our puppies & mama will reside in our home. We have cameras set up in the whelping area so puppies can be checked at any given moment regardless of where in the house or yard we are or even if we go to town for groceries. It is our utmost goal to provide our puppies and dogs a loving and caring environment with the noises & movements around them of everyday family life.
Q: Are your parent dogs health and genetic tested?
A: Be careful that you understand the answer you may hear to this from some breeders. “Healthy parents” or “vet checked” or “tested through parentage” are answers that mean “NO, that breeder does not health check” All of our adult dogs have their full genetic panel complete for poodles as well as their Hips & Elbows x-rayed and certified by either OFA or Pennhip to ensure we do not breed genetically -prone dysplastic dogs. This means we are doing our best to rule out any predisposition health problems.
Q: When can we take our puppy home?
A: 8 weeks of age, but not a day before. Arrangements will be made between breeder & families for the day best suited for them for pick up.
Q: How do I Pick-Up/Delivery?
A: Pick-up of your puppies happens at 8 weeks of age. Arrangements will be made with each family for pick up. If a family cannot pick up at 8 weeks, there will be charged a boarding fee of $30/day from 9+weeks of age. If it is requested that a puppy stays longer than 10 weeks, an additional fee will be required for beginner training.
Pick up will be at Amisk, Alberta at our farm. Please inquire about pricing for land travel delivery options, we must have minimum of 1 week to arrange land delivery schedule. We do not permit our puppies to travel by air cargo, a reputable and approved pet delivery service must be hired or a flight nanny must be hired. We can provide a flight nanny at your expense if needed, pet delivery service also at your expense. Our nearest airport is Edmonton, Alberta (YEG), approx. 250km from our farm (6 hour turn around time direct).
Q: How/When do we pick our puppy?
A: Puppies are reserved in order of deposits received. Your puppy choice will be at 7 weeks of age after temperament testing is complete (day 49-51), however additional temperament is also based on environmental factors & training as the puppy is raised. You may schedule an in person appointment to pick your puppy or choice can be done via video and phone conversation with breeder. Families with paid deposits may schedule an in-person visit of entire litter at week 5-6, however puppy choice will not be until 7 weeks of age.
Q: Do your puppies come with a health guarantee?
A: Yes, our puppies come with a 2 year health guarantee on genetic poodle disorders. We do not guarantee hips/elbows as this is very controversial in how a puppy is raised for the first 2 years of life as their skeleton grows and matures. We can assure that parent dogs have healthy bone structure. Please do your research on how to protect your puppy’s skeletal health during their first 2 years.
Q: What supplies do you recommend for our family to have before puppy comes home?
A: A metal or plastic crate is absolutely essential to house training, night time sleeping, and overall training of all kinds. It might be best to borrow a smaller size for the first month of having your puppy home. We can recommend what size your puppy will need as a mature dog. We strongly recommend the use of a crate for the dog’s full lifespan, or at very least the first 3 years.
Slicker brush and metal comb, nail clippers, a few toys, a comfortable pad for the crate, food/water bowls, a high-quality puppy kibble (not grocery store brands), tiny 1-ingredient only treats to use during training times. We will send you a newsletter with some detailed information.
Q: How often do poodles need grooming?
A: Your puppy will be accustomed to brushing, clippers, and nail trims when they go home. It is of utmost importance to continue several times per week with brushing, nail trims weekly. It is your job to continue training your puppy to behave properly during grooming. Schedule your first puppy groom by 12-16 weeks of age (after its second vaccination). Continue on a regular schedule with your groomer every 4-6 weeks for puppy’s first year of life. This is not just for appearance but for training. Poodle puppies may seem like they don’t really need brushing, their hair is soft, however their adult coat comes in over the period of 9-18 months and they must be accustomed to proper grooming behavior long before that. Poodles will need to be fully groomed every 4-8 weeks for their entire life, with regular brushing in between. There is no excuse for a matted poodle. Owning a poodle is a commitment for the whole lifetime.
Q: Do poodles shed & are they hypo-allergenic?
A: Poodles generally do not shed at all. You may see some minimal hair in the brush with adult dogs but that is because of the brushing action. Poodles are hypoallergenic to most people however this is not a guarantee that a poodle will be hypoallergenic to someone with a severe allergy. If you have a person in your family with allergies we invite you to try to spend some time with a purebred poodle (not a doodle) and see how you react. We can also work with you prior to a deposit by sending samples on a cloth etc to see how you react.
Q: What if we can no longer care for our poodle?
A: As will be stated in your final puppy contract, if at any point you cannot care for your dog you MUST contact us and we will take it back or at the very least help you find it a new home. It is very important to us that we know where all of our puppies/dogs are throughout their entire lives and ensure they have the best homes.
Q: What vet care will puppies have?
A: Puppies are dewormed at 4, 6 and 8 weeks of age and receive their first puppy vaccines 8 weeks of age just prior to joining their new families. Puppies are also micro-chipped. Vaccination appointment will also include vet check.
All puppies will be sold with a non-breeding contract and must be spayed/neutered between the age of 9-18 months. This is responsibility of the family. Proof of spay/neuter will be asked for by breeder. Under no conditions will the dog be allowed to breed and doing so is considered theft of breeding rights. Registration papers will be forwarded to the family once proof of spay/neuter is received.
Q: Are poodles good with kids and families?
A: Yes, poodles are wonderful family dogs. From the very beginning teach your children of all ages to respect the puppy (and all dogs of every age/breed) during meal times, chew times, and nap times.
Poodles are very loving and affectionate dogs. They are considered medium-high activity level. They like to be included in as many family activities as possible. They love socializing, swimming, ball fetching, hiking, camping, bike rides, walks, absolutely everything! Poodles are not couch potato dogs, however can be taught to be calm and relax throughout the day in a typical schedule (which is just as important to teach as other obedience commands).I can recommend several good trainers throughout Canada, most have a 3 month + waiting time so always best to plan ahead.
